The City of New York has been served by two Roman Catholic parishes which were established under the patronage of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In the Archdiocese of New York, the Church of the Sacred Hearts of Mary and Jesus was a former Roman Catholic parish church, primarily serving Italian-Americans, that has been demolished. The church was located on 307 East 33rd Street, in the Kips Bay area of Manhattan.
Another Italian-American parish, the Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Brooklyn, New York) is located in the Diocese of Brooklyn (which is a separate entity from the Archdiocese), and was established by Fr. Joseph Fransioli in 1882 as the Catholic Mission of the Italian Colony of the City of Brooklyn. This parish was merged with that of St. Stephen, and is now called the Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary–St. Stephen, occupying the church building of the former St. Stephen Parish.[1]
The parish was established in 1872. The brick church was built 1915 for $35,000 to designs by Nicholas Serracino of 1170 Broadway. The rector at the time was Rev. Joseph Congedo.[2]
The Manhattan parish was established and the church built in 1915 with little changes apart from the replacement of the original oak doors with cruciform windows with black metal doors with square windows.[3] The church has a parish school of the same name from 1925 through 1937.[3] It had a high school for girls which was run by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The high school was closed in the 1970s.
The parish was closed in January 2007, one of several closed that year by Cardinal Edward Egan of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. It was then merged with the Church of Our Lady of the Scapular-St. Stephen [4] and the church and school were demolished.[5]
A small chapel dedicated to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary was opened on the site in May 2009. It is located at 325 E 33rd Street, and is prominently dated "A.D. 2009." It serves as the chapel for the residence of the same Cardinal Egan who ordered the closing of the parish, since his retirement as Archbishop of New York.
